This soap is designed specifically for when you are a bonehead (knowingly or unknowingly) and get yourself tangled up with poison ivy. You use this soap after exposure, to cut the urushiol oil (the main irritant) from the plant. It works best when you use it immediately after exposure.

As I have said before I am no medical professional, and I cannot officially give medical advice- but our family is so allergic that if there is poison ivy in a burn pile somewhere in the county we are getting a rash from it. So here is what WE do:

After working outside- we immediately shower in cold water and use this soap, allowing the suds to sit on the skin for about a minute or so. After showering we use a fresh towel and then put that towel in the laundry so there is no chance of someone else transferring. As a side note- dry off in a smart order- dry off covered areas first like genitals, and face, and THEN dry off exposed areas like arms and legs. Trust me- you only have to get it in your crotch once….

We follow up by putting the jewelweed salve on any areas that might be beginning to itch, cover with a cotton wrap, and follow up with an oral antihistamine. This is our ritual. We even go so far as to have a bucket for all clothing after working outside and we shave off this soap with a cheese grater and let it soak overnight and put it in the wash the next day.
